DPTechnics' Walter Cellular IoT Module Family Grows, With the Walter Cat 1 Bis
DPTechnics is preparing its second crowdfunding campaign, as its Walter cellular system-on-module family grows by one: meet the Walter Cat 1 Bis. "Walter Cat 1 bis is a small-form-factor IoT SoM [Internet of Things System-on-Module] that adds support for worldwide LTE Cat 1 bis to the powerful [Espressif] ESP32-S3 SoC [System-on-Chip]," DPTechnics' Daan Pape explains. "On top of the ESP32-S3’s many built-in peripherals — such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Wi-Fi b/g/n, and Bluetooth 5 — Walter also features the Sequans GC02S1 LTE Cat 1 bis modem." This isn't the first entry in the Walter family: we first saw the original Walter three years ago, combining an Espressif ESP32-S3 microcontroller with a Sequans Monarch GM02SP for cellular connectivity and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reception. The board launched in crowdfunding on Crowd Supply around a year later, successfully raising almost $70,000 to bring it to production. The new model sticks with the tried-and-tested system-on-module format, and retains the same Espressif ESP32-S3 microcontroller and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 5 module. Where it differs is in the cellular side of things, moving from the Monarch GM02SP of the original Walter to the Sequans GC02S1 LTE Cat 1 bis. The new modem, certified for global use, is based around 3GPP LTE Release 14, providing up to 10Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload throughput. There's a nano-SIM slot with support for SGP.32 physical SIM cards and pre-SGP.42 eSIMs, and an ultra-low-power deep-sleep mode. Elsewhere on the board are 24 general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins, any of which can be programmed for UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, I2S, and SD bus connectivity, analog to digital and digital to analog converters (ADC/DAC), and a physical reset button.

Drive Systems in Action – From the Deep Sea to Outer Space
When it comes to developing reliable drive systems for the world’s most demanding environments – and beyond – every detail matters. Ultra Motion, a U.S.-based specialist in electromechanical servo systems, designs and manufactures actuators that operate reliably from the deep sea to outer space. In close partnership with FAULHABER, they create solutions that combine maximum power density, precision, and robustness, making them indispensable for numerous high-end applications. Ultra Motion’s fields of application are as diverse as they are challenging. Pressure-compensated, oil-filled linear and rotary actuators are deployed in maritime applications at depths of up to 6,000 meters. In aerospace, customized systems prove their capabilities under vacuum and radiation conditions, powering both manned and unmanned aircraft. The robust drives also demonstrate their strengths in unmanned vehicles, industrial automation, as well as medical and research technology. What all of these applications have in common is the need for actuators that combine maximum reliability with outstanding power density. FAULHABER technology at the core FAULHABER motors of the BP4 family form the heart of Ultra Motion’s L-Series Linear Servos and T-Series Rotary Servos. In both cases, the brushless DC motors with high power density, paired with precision planetary gearheads, deliver high torque in compact housings. The result is drives that excel in dynamics and reliability, even under extreme conditions. For example, the L-Series is equipped with the unique Phase Index contactless absolute position feedback, enabling precise control even in harsh environments. A particular highlight is the T3U-Series Submersible Rotary Servo. A specially engineered output shaft provides increased torque capacity here, while a vented, oil-filled configuration allows for pressure-compensated operation down to 6,000 meters.

ElectroglaZ - A transparent power delivery technology
Zytronic’s ElectroglaZ technology is a bespoke lamination of non-conductive and conductive transparent glass. The arrangement allows power to be transferred across two or more individual layers within the laminate and tapped/extracted at the required locations to power multiple low power (less than 50V) devices. The delivery of this energy is wire/cable free and invisible to the user. ElectroglaZ is a patent pending technology. How Does ElectroglaZ Work? To tap into the power, apertures (typically 30 to 100mm in diameter) are machined into the highly conductive glass where the required low power electrical devices will be fitted. These devices connect to the positive and negatively charged inner coatings of the laminated glass. Unlike traditional power delivery systems, electrical devices fitted into an ElectroglaZ do not require a wire or cable connection and appear to be freely ‘floating’ within an optically clear glass panel with no visual means of power connection. Although powered devices are the primary focus, the technology also allows the transfer of data. Zytronic can process the glass in-house using a variety of methods i.e., cutting, machining, grinding, polishing, printing, thermal tempering and lamination. What Are The Potential Uses For ElectroglaZ? ElectroglaZ offers new possibilities in many applications like low voltage LED Lighting or USB power and charging (in Retail furniture, Point of sale, Museums or Galleries), HVAC, Building automation and security, Infotainment or Home appliances.

Fine Motor Skills for Humanoid Robots
Whether in Avatar, Iron Man, or Alien – robots and exoskeletons have fascinated audiences on screen for decades. They grant humans superhuman strength, extend their capabilities, and enable spectacular new forms of movement and precision. What was once pure science fiction has become reality: robotic assistance systems are now an integral part of our world. Their purpose is not to compete with humans but to support and relieve them. Modern robots and exoskeletons enhance human abilities, take over physically demanding or highly precise tasks, and create new possibilities for collaboration between humans and machines. With his keynote “Intelligent Manipulation – Fine Motor Skills for Humanoid Robots,” Prof. Homayoon Kazerooni demonstrated just how close this future already is. The renowned researcher from the University of California, Berkeley, offered exciting insights into the current state of humanoid robotics – and into a technology with the potential to fundamentally transform the working world. “Humanoids are here for real.” With this statement, Prof. Kazerooni emphasized that the potential of humanoid robots extends far beyond research laboratories: in manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, logistics, and warehousing, they open up entirely new possibilities for industrial automation. The Trio of Human Competence Using the example of production workers, Prof. Kazerooni illustrated the three central elements of human labor: intelligence, vision, and manipulation. “Ordinary intelligence” – thinking – is implemented in humanoid robots through artificial intelligence. Vision is handled by cameras and image-processing systems. Manipulation – grasping and movement – is enabled by advanced robotic hands and grippers. This makes it clear that modern humanoids are already approaching the essential human abilities: cognitive intelligence, perception, and fine motor dexterity.

Humanoid Robotics demands dexterity in motion
The hand is perhaps the most utilized human tool. Its dexterity, fine motor skills and sensory feedback make it the interface between the body and the environment. Reproducing this fascinating functionality in an artificial hand is one of the greatest challenges in robotics, and at the same time one of its most difficult tasks. Whether in automation or medical robotics, industrial applications or modern prosthetics - robotic hands are expected to do what the human hand has perfected over thousands of years: coordinate complex movements, use different gripping techniques, react to external stimuli and precisely use force. It's not just about shape and mobility, but also about miniature motors, intelligent control and the ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. The human hand is a highly complex and finely tuned integration of 27 bones, over 30 joints and muscles as well as numerous tendons for maximum flexibility and control. For an artificial hand, this means that it must be designed to be robust and flexible, light and stable, as well as compact and efficient. It is a balancing act that places high demands on materials, design, and most importantly, drive technology! Electric motors ensure powerful movements, sensors provide the necessary feedback and intelligent control systems coordinate the processes in real time. In short, for a robotic hand to move as human-like as possible, it needs a precision, and finely tuned inner components . The aim is to create a symbiosis of technology and biology – helping to restore losts of abilities or to expand human capabilities. The transition between humanoid robotics and modern prosthetics is fluid. Both disciplines use similar technical principles to enable movements that come as close as possible to the human model.
