Doing more of what we already do? Doing it better (but what exactly does \u201cbetter\u201d mean)? Or developing something new and additional? This is exactly the theme of Bert Bruggeman\u2019s keynote at Advanced Engineering. He advocates for a definition of \u201cadvanced\u201d that is more aligned with the ecosystems we operate in, and with humans as a species.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22ecd2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22ecd2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3805\" data-end=\"4113\">Bert is Chair at The Ocean Cleanup and CEO of Aurelia. He knows better than anyone how current human thinking and behavior is putting pressure on our planet. \u201cYes, we can clean the oceans perfectly, but that is not the solution,\u201d he says. \u201cThe real cause lies in our system; that is what we need to address.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-073a394 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"073a394\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A new way of thinking<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7924c6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c7924c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"4143\" data-end=\"4695\">In his keynote, he argues that it is in our own interest as a species to better align ourselves with self-sustaining and adaptive systems that operate in greater harmony with nature. \u201cToday, we look at the world as a machine made of separate parts. But we have forgotten that we are part of a larger ecosystem and of nature, which we are currently ignoring and destroying. And the only other living system that continues until it exhausts its ecosystem is a cancer. And that ultimately destroys itself. That is the urgent conversation we need to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4697\" data-end=\"4995\">How do we reverse that view and optimize the entire system? \u201cNot by eliminating the old, but by adding additional insight so we can create a different output. The most successful species are those that create value for the system by expressing themselves, rather than simply extracting that value.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21ff275 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"21ff275\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Creating waves together<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ddf8d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ddf8d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5358\">Bert translates this message into concrete actions for engineers and shares five things engineers can start doing differently from tomorrow. \u201cInstead of pointing to higher levels, I want to look at how we design the world today. My approach starts from the engineer\u2019s perspective, focusing on short-term goals and problem-solving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5360\" data-end=\"5930\">\u201cBecause in the end, everyone has a role to play in this process. Yes, leaders and executives must set different goals and rethink what \u2018capital\u2019 we are actually working toward. But it is not a linear process where an idea flows from A to B to C. Instead, let\u2019s start acting within our own capabilities and create waves and islands of coherence that can transform the whole. We are not going to solve this problem, nor are we going to create world peace on the stock exchange. But if we don\u2019t change the way we think and act, there won\u2019t be many generations after ours.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-141df5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"141df5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5968\" data-end=\"6145\"><strong>An urgent call to action from a sharp and distinctive voice, with insights every \u201cadvanced\u201d engineer should hear.
