Efforts to transition to this model, including through the principles of <em data-start=\"284\" data-end=\"295\">ecodesign<\/em>, are therefore often limited to <em data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"347\">low-hanging fruit<\/em> or even examples of <em data-start=\"368\" data-end=\"382\">greenwashing<\/em>. Karine Van Doorsselaer, Senior Lecturer in Materials Science and Ecodesign at the University of Antwerp, aims to change this with her lecture at <em data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"551\">Advanced Engineering<\/em> on Thursday, May 22.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e0f5ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1e0f5ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Are cardboard cups better for the environment than plastic cups? Can circularity and environmental impact really be expressed in numbers? But how do you achieve that? And what factors should you consider? Karine wants to broaden the perspective of engineers and designers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d33f2b1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d33f2b1\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef1bafd elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ef1bafd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One way she does this is by critically examining the use of so-called <em data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1261\">ecological materials<\/em>. <em data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1370\">&#8220;Because they don\u2019t actually exist\u2014it\u2019s all about using materials in an environmentally responsible way.&#8221;<\/em> Another common misconception she will debunk is that the circular economy is merely about recycling materials. That is \u2018lifecycle thinking\u2019.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"2278\">The use of <em data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1953\">biomaterials<\/em> should also be approached critically. <em data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2276\">&#8220;For example, if we focus on using bamboo or hemp but, in doing so, significantly reduce a product\u2019s lifespan or usability, it will end up in the waste stream much sooner. That\u2019s not ecological at all. The thoughtless use of biomaterials is a pitfall that many designers fall into!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2555\">Through her lecture, Karine aims to provide a critical lens that professionals can apply in their daily work and life. <em data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2553\">&#8220;I hope that everyone attending the lecture will learn to think more long-term and realize that enabling a circular economy is a shared responsibility.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2839\"><em data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2819\">&#8220;80% of a product\u2019s environmental impact is determined during the design phase. Designers and engineers, therefore, have a huge responsibility.
